INCIDENT SUMMARY:

On 8-10-2018 at approximately 8:10 A.M, the Township Kalamazoo Police Department (TKPD) responded to a call for assistance.  Family members reported a subject may be suffering from a mental health crisis. When officers arrived, they located a 26-year-old man standing in the parking lot of a business wielding a knife.  Officers attempts to get the subject to drop the knife and comply with verbal commands were unsuccessful. The subject commandeered a family members running vehicle in an attempt to flee the area.  While fleeing, the subject intentionally rammed a TKPD patrol car, and then led officers from Township of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department on a chase which ended in Allegan County.  Officers were able to take the subject into custody as he tried to run away from his vehicle. There are no reported injuries to the subject or officers. The 26-year-old man was immediately transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The case will be forwarded to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors office for review on criminal charges.
